Partials & dentures
Partials and dentures, sometimes referred to as 'false teeth' can also be used to replace missing teeth. Both these options are removable. That means they are not permanently fixed in your mouth and you will be requried to take them out at night to allow the tissues to rest, and as well as to clean both your teeth and the partial/denture.
Partials generally have a metal framework and are supported by the remaining teeth in the mouth by clasps and rests. Occasionally a transitional/temporary partial will be made entirely of acrylic/plastic, but it is much less durable and does not stay in place as well as one with metal clasps. An acrylic partial is only a temporary fix, often used immediately after extraction of teeth while we are waiting for the tissue to heal.
Dentures replace all the teeth in a praticular arch - upper or lower and are acrylic or acrylic and metal.
When teeth have been missing for some time, the bone in the jaw tends to resorb. This can create a problem for patients who require dentures as there is not always sufficient structure for the denture to adhere to. The result is a loose denture or one that shifts during eating. This can be fixed in part by relining the denture periodically as the underlying tissue reshapes itself over time.
In some instances implant dentures may be recommended. This type of denture is done in conjunction with dental implants. A couple of implants are placed into the jaw. After integration, they can be used to support clips or a bar on to which the denture can then clip. This provides a very solid support for the denture and prevents any movement when chewing or speaking.
