Dental Veneers
Dental veneers are known by many names - facings, porcelain jackets, lumineers. Basically they are very thin porclain coverings used to cover the front surface of a tooth to improve color, shape, or size. They can close gaps, mask tetracycline staining or restore chipped edges. They can even be used to make teeth appear straighter, sometimes referred to as 'non-orthodontic veneering'.
They look very much like a false fingernail. In many instances little or no tooth structure needs to be removed to prepare the tooth for the veneer. Each situation is unique and this will be discussed with you in advance.
Dr. Roberts will prepare the tooth and then take an impression. The porclain facing is made in a dental lab, from this impression, under intense heat and pressure so that the resulting restoration is very strong and stain resistant.
Once the impression is taken, a temporary will be made to cover/protect the tooth if some enamel removal was required. this will eliminate sensitivity and leave your tooth looking natural in the interm. This temporary however is fragile and care should be taken with bitting into hard foods and with flossing.
The requires between 7 and 10 days to complete the veneer. You will have an opportunity to see it placed in your mouth prior to it being permanently placed. This is the time to speak up if there is anything you don't like about it in terms of shape or color. changes are more difficult after it is permanently place.
Once it is permanently bonded you're ready to face the world once again. In terms of care, it requires the same attention as the rest of your teeth - proper home care and regular check-ups. How long it lasts is dependant on how well you look after it (much like the rest of your teeth).
