Crowns
Crowns are often referred to as caps. They basicially cover and protect the remaining portion of the tooth, protecting it from further damage.
Crowns are recommended after root canals. The reason for this is that once the nerves and blood vessels are removed from the tooth, the tooth is dead and will eventually become very brittle.
These restorations are shaped like natural teeth and can be made completely of tooth colored porclain, a combination of metal and porclain, or entirely gold alloy. The material chosen depends on where the crown is being placed and the forces the crown will be subjected to. If you have a habit of grinding or clenching your teeth, a crown containing a metal substructure is generally recommended to give it additional strength.
